Abstract

This unique text/reference explores music with respect to quantum computing, a nascent technology that is advancing rapidly. Quantum computing promises to bring unprecedented higher speed and optimisation for running algorithms. Of course, this will benefit the music industry in one way or another, but also yield new approaches to musical creativity. There is a long history of research into using computers for music since the 1950s, and nowadays, computers are essential for the music economy. Indeed, it is very likely that quantum computers will impact the music industry in times to come. Consequently, a new area of research and development is emerging: quantum computer music. This unprecedented book examines this new field, introducing the fundamentals of quantum computing for musicians and the latest developments by pioneering practitioners. Each chapter focuses on innovative approaches that leverage the quantum-mechanical nature of quantum computing. Any additional theory required for understanding a given approach is supplied in the respective chapter, and plenty of references are provided. The book also includes some tutorials and walk-through examples, in addition to addressing scientific and aesthetic considerations. Written by pioneering experts, the present volume will serve as a first-of-its-kind reference for all those interested in or studying this fascinating and promising new field. Prof. Eduardo Reck Miranda is a composer and a professor in Computer Music at Plymouth University, UK, where he is a director of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Computer Music Research (ICCMR). His previous publications include the Springer titles Handbook of Artificial Intelligence for Music, Guide to Unconventional Computing for Music, Guide to Brain-Computer Music Interfacing and Guide to Computing for Expressive Music Performance.

Abstract

Last-mile delivery in cities, where the main problems are the traffic situation and ensuring access to customers' homes while maintaining their privacy, poses a substantial logistical challenge. This book explores how the service area of mobility, especially last-mile delivery, can be improved and smartified. It demonstrates how a design science method and a transdisciplinary approach have been used to create a traffic area analysis tool that can accommodate the uncertainty and incompleteness of geospatial data; a linguistic traffic merging tool; and a customer classifier. In terms of developing the optimization artifacts, the socio-economic and logistical aspects of cities were considered and fuzzy logic and nature-inspired swarm intelligence (fuzzy ant colony optimization) were applied as basic principles. Pursuing a transdisciplinary approach, the book offers both practical know-how from the industry and theoretical findings, making it a valuable asset for researchers and practitioners in the fields of mobility and logistics.

Abstract

Fifty years after the first experiments in computational art, international interest in the history of this subject remains strong and at the same time almost uncovered. This book began with the exhibition Algorithmic Signs, which was conceived, researched and curated by Francesca Franco in Venice in 2017. The origins of the exhibition included a series of meetings that gathered together the most celebrated international pioneers in the world of digital arts and the rare opportunity to interview them in their studios. Francesca Franco explores the history of computer art and its contribution to the broader field of contemporary art from the 1960s to the present. It is illustrated by the creative work of five of the most influential pioneers of computer art - Ernest Edmonds, Manfred Mohr, Vera Molnár, Frieder Nake, and Roman Verostko and includes the full visual documentation of the exhibition. The Algorithmic Dimension - Five Artists in Conversation offers more than a theoretical perspective; it offers readers the rare opportunity to hear the histories and developments of the fascinating art, created through the algorithm, in an accessible and stimulating narrative. The personal achievements of each artist are followed, including their original inspirations, and how they develop in parallel with technological advances. It also brings together for the first time the artists' common ideas and differences, and tales about how their paths have crossed over the years.

Abstract

This is the first book to focus on the problem of ensuring the correctness of floating-point hardware designs through mathematical methods. Formal Verification of Floating-Point Hardware Design, Second Edition advances a verification methodology based on a unified theory of register-transfer logic and floating-point arithmetic that has been developed and applied to the formal verification of commercial floating-point units over the course of more than two decades, during which the author was employed by several major microprocessor design companies. The theory is extended to the analysis of several algorithms and optimization techniques that are commonly used in commercial implementations of elementary arithmetic operations. As a basis for the formal verification of such implementations, high-level specifications of the basic arithmetic instructions of several major industry-standard floating-point architectures are presented, including all details pertaining to the handling of exceptional conditions. The methodology is illustrated in the comprehensive verification of a variety of state-of-the-art commercial floating-point designs developed by Arm Holdings. This revised edition reflects the evolving microarchitectures and increasing sophistication of Arm processors, and the variation in the design goals of execution speed, hardware area requirements, and power consumption. Many new results have been added to Parts I-III (Register-Transfer Logic, Floating-Point Arithmetic, and Implementation of Elementary Operations), extending the theory and describing new techniques. These were derived as required in the verification of the new RTL designs described in Part V.
